Why it matters
A plumber in Lyon targeting Lyon with presence or interest can pay for clicks from someone in another country reading about Lyon. That person will never book a plumber.
It is the default, so many campaigns use it without anyone choosing it. It suits travel, relocation and tourism, where customers search from elsewhere.
Where to find it in Google Ads
- Open a campaign, then Settings, then Locations.
- Expand Location options.
- Choose Presence: people in or regularly in your targeted locations.
- Check the location tabs under When and where ads showed to see clicks from outside your areas.
An example
A Barcelona dental clinic uses presence or interest and gets clicks from people in other countries researching dental tourism, who rarely book. Switching to presence keeps its ads for people in Barcelona.
Common mistakes
- Leaving the default on a local service business.
- Switching it off on a travel business that needs interest.
- Not checking where clicks came from after the change.
