The match types
Broad
- Written as
- rain jacket
- Matches
- Searches related to the keyword's meaning
Phrase
- Written as
- "rain jacket"
- Matches
- Searches that include the keyword's meaning
Exact
- Written as
- [rain jacket]
- Matches
- Searches with the same meaning
Negative keywords use the same notation but do not match close variants: plurals, misspellings, synonyms and accented forms each need their own line. Casing does not matter.
The negative forms add a minus sign, which some spreadsheets and tools expect. In Google Ads itself, paste negatives without the minus, into a negative keyword list or a campaign's negative keywords.

Which match type should I use?
Exact or phrase gives you control while you learn what converts. Broad match reaches more searches and works best with Smart Bidding and a good negative list.
Do I need the brackets when uploading?
In Google Ads Editor and in bulk uploads, the brackets and quotes set the match type. In the keyword field of the web interface, you can also pick the match type from a menu.
