Google Ads distance and location report template. How your ads do by how far people are and where they are.
The Distance and places template shows how your Google Ads results change with the distance between people and your business, nearest band first, beside a breakdown by region and by device. It is built for local businesses, and its distance table fills only when the account has location assets.
- 3 cards
- Nearest band first
- Last 30 days
What is in the distance and location report template? Distance first, then places and screens.
Which accounts is the distance and location report template for?
Businesses with an address people come to, or work out from: shops, clinics, restaurants, trades with a depot. Google measures distance from your business locations, which it knows through location assets, usually linked from a Google Business Profile. Without them the distance table stays empty, and only the two smaller cards fill.
An online shop with no premises gets little from this template. The Audience template covers places and devices, with hours and people as well.
How do you read a distance and location report? Card by card, and what to do next.
Distance
Rows run from the nearest band outwards, named as Google names them: Within 700 m, Within 5 km, Beyond 65 km, or the same in miles. Follow cost per conversion down the table. For many local businesses it climbs with distance, since people far away compare more and travel less.
Find the band where cost per conversion crosses what a new customer is worth to you. That band is your practical radius, whatever the targeting says today.
Turning bands into targeting
On manual bidding, layer radius targets around each location, say 5, 15 and 30 km, each with its own bid adjustment, lower on the outer rings. Under Smart Bidding, location bid adjustments are ignored. Change the targeting itself: shrink the radius, or move the far zone into its own campaign with a stricter target.
Check the location option as well. With Presence or interest, people far outside your radius who search about your area still see the ads, and they land in the outer bands.
Countries and regions, and devices
The regions card shows where people physically were, region by region for a business in one country. The devices card tells you how people reach you. A clinic whose results are calls should read it on conversions, and make sure its call asset shows on mobile.
What does a distance and location report show on a made-up account?
Mapleford Dental
A made-up account, for illustration
Mapleford Dental, a made-up dentist, has two practices 18 km apart and spends €1,000 a month. A new patient is worth about €90 in the first year. Over 90 days, the distance table reads:
Within 5 km
- Spend
- €1,281
- Bookings
- 61
- Cost per booking
- €21
Within 10 km
- Spend
- €722
- Bookings
- 19
- Cost per booking
- €38
Within 20 km
- Spend
- €570
- Bookings
- 6
- Cost per booking
- €95
Beyond
- Spend
- €320
- Bookings
- 2
- Cost per booking
- €160
Everything past 10 km costs more than a patient brings. Mapleford bids with Maximize conversions, so it narrows the radius to 10 km around each practice instead of adding bid adjustments, and reads the same template again a month later.
How do you change the distance and location report template?
- Sort the distance table by cost per conversion to rank bands by efficiency rather than by distance.
- Tick Conversion rate in its columns.
- Add the Calls card from the card library when calls are your main result.
Customize keeps your version for the whole workspace. A multi-location business with several accounts opens the template once per account, since a report covers one Google Ads account. For leaks between nearby locations, read our guide on geo bleed in multi-location accounts.

Why is my Google Ads distance report empty?
Google reports distance from your business locations, which it knows through location assets. With no location assets on the account, the distance table has no rows. The regions and devices cards still fill.
Does the distance report depend on radius targeting?
No. Google reports how far people were from your locations whatever targeting you use, by country, region or radius.
Can I bid by distance under Smart Bidding?
Location bid adjustments are ignored by Smart Bidding. Change the radius, or split the far zone into its own campaign with its own target.
How is it different from the Audience template?
Distance and places starts from how far people were from your business. Audience shows devices, hours, places and age and gender, and needs no location assets.
Which period should I use?
The template opens on the last 30 days. A practice with a few bookings a week gets steadier bands over 90 days.
