Why it matters
YouTube is reached three ways: Video campaigns for control over formats, Demand Gen for image and video in feeds and Shorts, and Performance Max, which can show on YouTube as part of its mix.
With Performance Max, an asset group with no video may run a video Google built from your images, on YouTube under your name.
Where to find it in Google Ads
- Filter Campaigns by type to see Video and Demand Gen campaigns.
- Check Performance Max asset groups for videos you uploaded and videos Google created.
- Open Insights and reports, then When and where ads showed, on the Where ads showed tab, to see YouTube channels and videos.
- Exclude YouTube channels or content types that do not fit your brand.
An example
A cosmetics brand finds its Performance Max running an auto-generated slideshow on YouTube. It uploads a 15 second video in three shapes, and the generated one stops showing.
Common mistakes
- Leaving Performance Max with no video of your own.
- Running YouTube with no content exclusions.
- Judging YouTube on clicks alone.
Checks that look at it
