Paused: who stopped it, and what to check before restarting.

Paused means a person, a rule or a script stopped the item. It keeps its history and costs nothing while paused. Google never pauses a campaign on its own.

Why Google shows it

Where it shows: in the Status column of the campaigns table.

  • Someone paused it by hand, for a season, a stock problem or a test.
  • An automated rule or a script paused it on a condition.
  • A parent is paused: an ad group in a paused campaign does not serve either.

How to fix it

  1. Open the change history to see who paused it, when, and from where.
  2. Read why it was paused before turning it back on.
  3. Check the budget, ads, prices and landing pages still fit today.
  4. Enable it at the right level: the campaign, then the ad group, then the keyword or ad.

What happens next

An enabled item serves again within minutes. A Smart Bidding campaign paused for weeks may go through Learning again.

How to stop it coming back

Name a reason in a label or a note whenever you pause something, so the next person knows when to turn it back on.

Review paused campaigns each month: some should be restarted, others removed from view.

Does a paused campaign lose its history?

No. Everything stays, and it can be turned back on at any time.

Is it better to pause or to remove?

Pause. A removed campaign cannot be edited again, while a paused one can be enabled with one click.
