The short answer
Asset group strength is Google's rating of how complete and varied a group's assets are. Like Ad strength, the rating itself is not used in the auction. What it points to is: a group short of images, videos or text gives Google fewer ads to build, in fewer formats. Oppy lists every Performance Max asset group rated below Good, and counts how many are Poor.
Why it matters
The rating is feedback, not a penalty. It shows how much distinct material Google has to build ads for every format: a group with no video of its own gets one generated for it, and a group with few images reaches fewer placements.
It is reported apart from thinness because they are two sentences. One says the group is short of material. The thin asset group check says exactly what to add.
How Oppy decides
The check reads every asset group's strength rating.
Checks that weigh money or clicks judge what they find on your own account's numbers, not on one figure applied to every account, so what counts as a problem on a small account is not the same on a large one. Checks on settings read how the account is set up.
When there is too little to go on, the check says so instead of guessing. A finding always comes with the rows behind it, so you can read the evidence before you decide.

| Needs trustworthy conversions | No. It does not wait for the tracking step. |
| What happens next | Reported in the audit with the rows behind it. The decision stays with you. |
Check it yourself in Google Ads
- In Google Ads, open a Performance Max campaign, then Asset groups.
- Look at the Asset group strength column, or the rating on each group.
- Note the groups rated Poor or Average.
- Open each to see what Google suggests adding.
What to do about it
Add what the group lacks: more headlines and descriptions, images in landscape, square and portrait, a logo, and at least one video of your own.
Make each asset distinct. Several near identical headlines raise the count without raising the rating.
