Google Ads search terms report template. What people searched for, and which searches paid off.

The searches report shows what people typed before they clicked your ads, split into the searches that converted and the ones that cost money and brought nothing. It opens on the last 30 days against the 30 before, with four key figures and two lists.

What is in the search terms report template?

Key figures: clicks, CTR, avg. CPC and conversion rate, against the 30 days before.

Searches that convert, half width, 10 rows: the searches with the most conversions, the cheaper first when two tie.

Searches that waste, half width, 10 rows: the searches that cost money and brought no conversion, the costliest first, with the total spent on such searches over the period.

Both lists read the account's 2,000 costliest searches that took a click. A search that ran in several ad groups is added up into one row.

Searches that convert. Give the winners a home.

A converting search that only reaches you through a broad keyword aimed at something else is a winner without a home. Add it as an exact keyword in its own ad group, with an ad that repeats its words. Its words belong in your headlines elsewhere too. If the top of the list is your own brand, read past it: the useful finds are below.

Searches that waste.

Do not block a search on cost alone. A search that spent €40 on three clicks has not had a fair chance. Use two thresholds drawn from your own figures: a click count at which zero conversions is telling, given your conversion rate, and a spend level at which the search had room to convert. The wasted spend estimator gives both.

A search past both bars, for something you do not sell, becomes a negative keyword. Write plurals in yourself, because negatives do not match close variants. Never block a search that has converted.

What the list cannot see

Google leaves out searches typed by very few people, and the cards read the 2,000 costliest. The total wasted is for the searches read, not every euro of the account.

What does a search terms report show on a made-up account?

Summit Bike Repairs

A made-up account, for illustration

  1. Summit Bike Repairs, a made-up repair shop, converts 8% of its clicks. Its searches report shows €1,180 spent on searches with no conversion in 30 days. First on the list: bike repair course, €96 over 31 clicks. At 8%, 31 clicks with nothing happen by chance about one time in thirteen, so the shop blocks course. Bike mechanic jobs goes too.

  2. E-bike battery repair, €38 over 6 clicks, stays: the shop repairs e-bikes, and six clicks prove nothing yet. On the converting side, gear tuning brought 9 conversions through the broad keyword bike repair. The shop gives it an exact keyword and its own ad.

Which accounts is the search terms report template for?

Accounts with Search or Shopping campaigns, whose search terms Google reports ad group by ad group. On an account that runs only Performance Max, Display or Video, both lists say No searches to show and only the key figures fill.

Click Customize to show up to 25 rows in each list, or to add a keywords table under them, so the searches and the keywords that bought them sit together. The report only reads: add negatives in Google Ads, or ask Oppy, which proposes them as a task for you to approve. The search term mining guide covers the method in full.

Why don't the searches add up to my account's spend?

Google leaves out searches typed by very few people, and the cards read the 2,000 costliest searches of the period. Part of the spend sits in no row.

How are the converting searches ordered?

By conversions, the most first. When two searches have the same number, the cheaper one comes first.

What does the total on Searches that waste include?

Everything spent over the period on the searches read that brought no conversion. The ten rows shown are only the costliest of them.

Should I block every search in the waste list?

No. Block only searches that are past a fair number of clicks and spend for your conversion rate, and that are for something you do not sell. Never block a search that has converted.

Is this the same as the search terms report in Google Ads?

It reads the same search terms from Google Ads, then sorts them into the searches that converted and the ones that cost money for nothing. The same search in several ad groups is added up.
