Google Ads monthly report template. Last month: the results, where the money went, the campaigns and the searches.
The monthly report answers what a client or a manager asks once a month: what did the money bring, and where did it go? It opens on last month against the month before, with seven cards filled from your Google Ads account.
- Last month vs the month before
- 7 cards
- Searches need Search or Shopping
What is in the monthly report template? Seven cards, in this order.
Whole months compare with the same number of whole months before, so last month is set against the month before it.
How do you judge a month fairly?
Months are not the same size. March has three more days than February, and a month with five weekends sells differently from one with four. Totals can rise 10% with nothing changed in the account.
So read the rates before the totals. Cost per conversion and, if you sell online, conversion value against spend are fair across months of any length. Raw spend and conversions are fair only when you divide them by the days.
For a business with seasons, change the comparison to Same days last year. December against November tells a gift shop nothing it did not already know.
What does each card of the monthly report tell you?
Breakdown of spend by campaign type
Watch the share each type takes from month to month. If Performance Max takes a larger slice every month while total conversions stay flat, it may be buying searches your Search campaigns used to win, your brand among them. The Performance Max and brand guide shows how to check.
Conversions by kind
This card splits conversions by what they are: purchases, leads, calls, sign-ups and so on. A kind that grows suddenly often means a new conversion action was added, not that customers changed. A kind that has no business value, such as a page view, should not count toward bidding. See primary conversions.
Searches that convert
The eight searches that brought the most conversions last month. For a client, it is the most concrete card of the report: the words their own customers typed. From one month to the next, watch for newcomers. A search that shows up for the first time often marks a new need, a season starting or a competitor leaving the auction. The card reads the account's 2,000 costliest searches of the month, and the searches report says what to do with each one.
Campaigns and What Oppy did
Read the ten campaigns by spend against the changes of the month. A campaign whose cost per conversion moved the week a bid strategy or a budget changed is telling you what that change did.
What does a monthly report show on a made-up account?
Kettle and Leaf
A made-up account, for illustration
Kettle and Leaf, a made-up tea shop, sells loose tea online. Its March report shows spend at €6,820 against €6,050 in February, 412 conversions against 371, and conversion value of €24,930 against €22,410. Every total is up about 11 to 13%.
Per day, spend went from €216 to €220. The growth is mostly three extra days. Cost per conversion barely moved, from €16.31 to €16.55, so the month was steady rather than good.
Two cards give the work for April. Breakdown shows Performance Max at 58% of spend. Searches that convert lists loose leaf earl grey with 14 conversions, and the account has no exact keyword for it. The shop adds that keyword to Search, and checks next month whether Performance Max's share drops.
Which accounts is the monthly report template for?
Any account. Searches that convert reads the search terms of Search and Shopping campaigns. On an account that runs only Performance Max, Display or Video, it says No searches to show, and the other cards still fill.
Conversion value needs values on your conversion actions. A lead generation account without values can swap it for conversion rate in Key figures. Click Customize, open the card's settings and pick the figure.
Other useful changes: add Searches that waste beside Searches that convert, so the month's waste and its winners sit side by side. Add Main goal to set the month against the target you agreed. More in the report builder.
Questions about the monthly report template.
Anything else? Ask Oppy in the product, or write to the team.
Which days does the monthly report template cover?
The last whole calendar month, in the account's time zone, compared with the month before. You can switch the comparison to the same days last year, or to no comparison.
Why does my monthly report show growth when nothing changed?
Months have different numbers of days. A 31-day month after a 28-day month adds about 10% to every total. Compare cost per conversion and other rates, or divide totals by the days.
Can I add Google Analytics figures to the monthly report?
Yes. Once Google Analytics 4 is connected, the Key figures card can show its metrics, such as sessions or purchase revenue, beside the Google Ads ones.
Is the monthly report built automatically?
Oppy stores a monthly report at the start of each month, under Written by Oppy, and emails a ready notice without a PDF to the addresses set under Settings, Operator. You can open this template at any time on last month.
How do I send the monthly report to a client?
Use Send: it attaches the PDF and takes up to 20 addresses. An admin can also add a public link, which opens without signing in and reads the figures again each time it opens.
