Google Ads ad performance report template. Each ad with its strength, clicks, cost and conversions.

The Ad performance template ranks every ad in your account by impressions, with its ad strength, clicks, click-through rate, spend, conversions and cost per conversion. Above the table, four key figures give the account's totals for the last 30 days against the 30 before.

What is in the ad performance report template? Totals on top, every ad below.

Ads are named by their first three headlines, so a responsive search ad is easy to recognise. Its campaign and ad group sit under the name.

Which accounts is the ad performance report template for?

Campaigns that hold ads in ad groups: Search, Display, Demand Gen and video. Performance Max works with asset groups instead of ad groups, so its ads do not appear here. The Performance Max template shows its asset groups with their ad strength.

An ad with no impressions in the period is left out, so paused ads drop off once their last impression falls outside the dates.

How do you read an ad performance report? Card by card, and what to do next.

Compare ads inside the same ad group

Twenty-five ads across an account mix brand and generic, cheap clicks and dear ones. Ads only compete within their ad group, so read them that way. Filter with Campaign containing, then compare the ads that share a campaign and ad group line.

Impressions are already Google's verdict

With ad rotation on Optimize, the default, Google shows the ad it expects to do better more often. An ad with a fifth of its ad group's impressions has usually lost on predicted results already. Rewrite it rather than keep it for balance.

Judge results on conversions per impression, not CTR alone. An ad that draws clicks with a vague promise can convert worse than a plainer one. CTR times conversion rate gives the figure.

Ad strength grades the build

Ad strength (Excellent, Good, Average, Poor) rates how an ad is put together: enough distinct headlines and descriptions, your keywords in them, few pins. Google reports more conversions on average for stronger ads, yet a Good ad can beat an Excellent one in your own table. Raise the Poor ones first, then let the figures decide.

What does an ad performance report show on a made-up account?

Wexcombe Removals

A made-up account, for illustration

  1. Wexcombe Removals, a made-up removals firm, has one ad group, house removals Leeds, with two responsive search ads. Over 30 days the table shows:

    • House Removals in Leeds | Fixed Price Quotes | Insured Movers

      Impressions
      8,400
      CTR
      6.1%
      Conversions
      31
      Per 1,000 impressions
      3.7
    • Leeds Removal Company | Book Online | From £299

      Impressions
      2,100
      CTR
      7.4%
      Conversions
      5
      Per 1,000 impressions
      2.4
  2. The second ad wins on CTR and loses where it counts. Wexcombe keeps the first, rewrites the second around the fixed-price promise, and reads the table again a month later.

How do you change the ad performance report template?

  • Tick Conversion rate and Conversion value in the ads table: a shop wants value, not a count.
  • Sort by cost per conversion. Best first means cheapest first for a cost.
  • Give each key figure its own comparison, Same days last year for a seasonal business.

Add the Assets card from the card library to see which headlines inside those ads carry them. Customize saves the whole thing as a report your workspace can open.

What is a Google Ads ad performance report?

A table of the ads in an account with their impressions, clicks, CTR, spend, conversions and cost per conversion. The Optizads template adds each ad's ad strength and the account's key figures against the period before.

Why are some of my ads missing?

Ads with no impressions in the period are left out. Performance Max campaigns have asset groups rather than ads in ad groups; they are in the Performance Max template.

How are ads named in the table?

A responsive ad is named by its first three headlines. Older ads use their headline parts or their name.

Does ad strength decide how well an ad does?

No. It grades how the ad is built. Google reports more conversions on average for stronger ads, but your own conversions per impression are the better judge between two ads.

How long should two ads run before I pick one?

Until the gap is larger than chance. As a rough guide, wait until each ad has dozens of conversions, not a handful, and compare ads from the same ad group.
