How is video view rate calculated in Google Ads?
View rate = views ÷ impressions
1,800 views from 6,000 impressions give 30%.
Source: Google Ads Help, TrueView view rate: Definition.
What counts as a view depends on the format. Skippable in-stream: 30 seconds, the whole ad if shorter, or an interaction. In-feed: a click on the thumbnail, or 10 seconds of autoplay. Shorts: 10 seconds, the whole ad if shorter, a click on the call to action, or a like, comment or share.
Since October 2025, Google Ads calls these TrueView views, and its API names the rate after TrueView too. Bumper ads and non-skippable ads are bought per thousand impressions and earn no views, so they have no view rate.
What moves it
The first five seconds decide most of it, before the skip button appears. Audience fit comes next: a well-made ad shown to the wrong people gets skipped. Length matters through the rule itself, since a 20-second ad only needs to be watched to its end.
Read the quartiles beside it. A high view rate with few people reaching 75% means the opening works and the middle loses them.
A worked example
A running-shoe brand tests two cuts of one ad, 15 and 45 seconds long. The 15-second cut gets 4,000 views from 10,000 impressions, 40%. The 45-second cut gets 2,600 views from 10,000, 26%.
The short cut earns a view at 15 seconds, the long one only at 30. The duel is not fair on view rate. The team compares the two on what viewers did next, site visits and sales from each, and on Video played to 100%.
Where do you find video view rate in Google Ads?
- Open Campaigns, click the Columns icon, then Modify columns.
- Type TrueView in the column search and add TrueView views, TrueView view rate and TrueView average CPV.
- Add Video played to 25%, 50%, 75% and 100% to see where people stop watching.
- Compare ads within one campaign, format and audience, at the Ads level.
How does Optizads read video view rate?
Optizads reads View rate as Google totals it, for the exact days you pick. A rate cannot be rebuilt cleanly from daily rows, so Google's own figure wins, kept for 30 minutes. When Google cannot be read, the stored days stand in, each day's rate weighted by its impressions.
In the Video group of the metric picker it sits with Video views, Avg. CPV and the four quartiles, Video played to 25%, 50%, 75% and 100%. The quartiles are read per campaign from Google and combined, weighted by impressions.
A report's Performance chart can draw View rate by week across a quarter. A slow slide on the same ad and audience is the usual sign that a creative has worn out, and the chart shows it before the cost per result moves.
What are the common mistakes with video view rate?
- Comparing view rates across formats or ad lengths that count a view at different points.
- Judging a bumper or non-skippable campaign on view rate, which it never earns.
- Reading view rate without the quartiles or what viewers did afterwards.
- Treating a high view rate as reach: it says how often people watched, not how many people.
