The short answer
Double counting usually comes from two primary conversion actions recording the same result, often the Google tag and an imported Google Analytics 4 event. Compare each action's count for the same period against your real orders. Keep the one that matches as primary, make the other secondary, and check that leads count once per click.
How it happens
- Two sources for one event. A Google Ads purchase tag and a GA4 purchase event imported into Google Ads, both primary.
- A thank-you page counted twice. A page view and a form submit event for the same lead.
- Lead actions counting every conversion. The same person sends the form twice and becomes two leads.
- Calls counted in two places. A website call conversion and the same call imported from your call tracking tool, both primary.
How to spot it
Open the conversions report and segment by conversion action. For the last 30 days, compare each primary action's count with what the business actually recorded: orders in the shop, leads in the CRM.
Two primary actions with nearly the same count, and a total about twice the real number, is the classic sign. The same account can show very different sales depending on which action is primary.
How to fix it safely
Pick the source of truth
Keep the action whose count matches real orders, usually the one with the real order value.
Make the other secondary
Secondary actions are still reported, but bidding stops counting them. Nothing is deleted.
Count leads once
Set lead actions to count one conversion per click.
Expect the numbers to drop
Reported conversions fall to the real figure, and cost per conversion rises to its real level. Smart Bidding needs time to adjust.
Do not guess
If you cannot tell which action is real, ask whoever set up the tags. Demoting the wrong one quietly halves your real conversions.
What Optizads does
The audit finds primary actions recording the same result in the same window and prints both counts. It asks you which one is real instead of choosing, because nothing in the data can tell them apart. Once you answer, Oppy keeps the real one primary.
